MARQUETTE, MI-- The Michigan Secretary of State office is holding a workshop in Marquette Thursday for those interested in serving on the new Michigan Independent Citizens Redistricting Commission.
Voters amended the state constitution last year to make residents responsible for drawing new district lines for the Michigan Legislature and U.S. Congress. The 13-member commission will consist of 4 Democrats, 4 Republicans, and 5 members not affiliated with either party.
The free workshop will include an overview of the new redistricting process and an opportunity for participants to fill out an application, which takes about 15 minutes. Notaries will be available to complete the notarized signature requirement for each application at no cost. Participants should bring a photo ID to the workshop so notaries can verify their identity.
All eligible voters are encouraged to apply. No special skills or expertise are required.
The workshop takes place Thursday from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Founder’s Room in NMU’s Northern Center.
