Grants aim to improve U.P. neighborhoods

MARQUETTE, MI--   The Michigan State Housing Development Authority has awarded Neighborhood Enhancement Grants to two U.P. communities.

Officials say the goal of the grants is to help residents become engaged in facilitating positive change for their neighborhoods.

The Gogebic Ontonagon Community Action Agency was awarded $50,000 for exterior home improvements like siding, roofing, porches and sidewalks. The money will be used for single-family homes in Bessemer’s Yale neighborhood.

The City of Negaunee was given $50,000 for enhancements including painting, window fixtures, shutters, awnings, front door paint and/or repair and walkway reconstruction in the residential neighborhood near the downtown area.

Funded projects must be completed by the fall and make a noticeable difference within the community.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
