Downstate man who dragged MSP sergeant, fled police finally caught

ST. IGNACE, MI--   A Harbor Springs man is in the Mackinac County Jail for various felonies, including dragging a Michigan State Police sergeant with his vehicle.

Wednesday around 7:30 p.m. Alger County Sheriff’s deputies were in pursuit of a reckless driver in a Chevy Tahoe. They terminated the chase but alerted other police agencies.

A short time later the Tahoe drove into the parking lot of the St. Ignace Post. A sergeant tried to contact the driver, who fled. The sergeant caught up with the suspect at the Mackinac Bridge toll booth, blocked him in with his patrol car and told him to turn off the car. When the suspect refused the sergeant reached into the vehicle to get the keys and the driver went in reverse, dragging the sergeant and hitting two other vehicles. The Tahoe then busted through the toll booth and fled south on I-75.

Several law enforcement agencies pursued the suspect until he eluded them in Petoskey. Police found the Tahoe abandoned in Resort Township in Emmet County. Troopers set up a perimeter in the area and used K-9s, Emergency Support personnel and Coast Guard and Michigan State Police helicopters to search.

The suspect—a 47-year-old Harbor Springs man—was found Thursday morning around 6:30 in a Harbor Springs condominium and transported to the Mackinac County Jail.

The MSP sergeant was treated at McLaren Northern Michigan Hospital in Petoskey and released.

The MSP was assisted by the Mackinaw City Police Department, Emmet County Sheriff’s Office, Petoskey Department of Public Safety, Little Traverse Bay Band of Odawa Indians Police Department, Boyne City Police Department, and the Charlevoix County Sheriff’s Office.
