MANISTIQUE, MI--   The Department of Natural Resources is providing funds for a project to remove the Manistique Paper dam in Schoolcraft County.

The $3 million in supplemental funding comes from the DNR’s Dam Management Grant Program. The program assists with the removal or repair of deteriorating dams that threaten public safety and the habitats of fish and other aquatic species.

Officials say the Manistique Paper dam is deteriorated and no longer provides a functional barrier to the invasive sea lamprey.

The DNR Fisheries Division will receive the money and oversee the project.
