Cambensy mining bill passes House

LANSING, MI--   A bill to create a Committee on Michigan’s Mining Future has passed the state House.

The legislation is sponsored by Representative Sara Cambensy. She says it would make advisory and legislative policy recommendations to strengthen and develop sustainable mining practices while protecting the environment.

The committee would consist of 15 members with governor-appointed representatives from various mining operations, local governments, environmental non-profit organizations, Native American tribes and the United Steelworker’s Union. It would also include officials from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and the Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy.

Cambensy says the state needs to come up with legislative policies to help alleviate the bust and boom cycles in the mining industry.

The bill now heads to the Senate.
